Fall trees manually – basic


Nationally Recognised TrainingThis 2 day nationally accredited course develops the skills required to assess, plan and safely carry out manual tree-felling operations using a chainsaw in a non-production environment.

It covers:

  • procedures for falling ‘basic’ trees, i.e. single stem or non-complex multi-stem sound trees that are smaller in height relative to local forest size, with a diameter less than the chainsaw bar length, a lean that is not excessive & a weight distribution that is not complex to assess
  • controlling fall direction with wedges and/or control with hingewood
  • selecting using and maintaining tools and equipment
  • operating and maintaining a chainsaw
  • how to safely and effectively fall trees, taking into account environmental requirements

Mode of delivery:

Learning outcomes:

  • Review WHS, operational and maintenance requirements for general chainsaw use
  • Chainsaw servicing, troubleshooting and saw/chain sharpening
  • WHS and environmental requirements for tree falling
  • Identify operational hazards and control measures
  • Assess trees and surroundings for defects and hazards & plan for falling
  • Identify tree falling direction, escape routes and site preparation
  • Plan sequence of cuts and carry out cutting and fall basic tree
  • Fall a range of trees using selected cutting techniques
  • Identify tree hang ups and control measures
  • Field exercises


Assessment is in two (2) parts:

  1. Knowledge Assessment
  2. Performance Assessment – delivered predominantly outdoors

Course duration:

  • 2 days


  • Course is conducted at your workplace or at a negotiated location
  • This course is nationally accredited.
  • Students competently completing the course will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in FPICOT2236 Fall trees manually (basic)
